Public awareness is vital in the fight against Carbon Monoxide

Raising the awareness of Carbon Monoxide (CO) poisoning is vital to cutting deaths and serious illness, Lawrence Slade from Energy UK said today. Energy UK runs the CO – Be Alarmed campaign which works to reduce the number of deaths caused by the deadly gas and encourage the public to install an alarm. Representatives of the campaign are attending the IGEM conference; Knowledge is Power along with a host of other stakeholders to discuss how energy companies and other bodies can work together to cut the toll from the silent killer.

The conference will bring campaigners together to spread awareness of the dangers of CO poisoning and prevent future cases. Representatives of the gas networks, leisure industry, landlords, the emergency services, travel associations and parliament will make up the 200 strong delegations.

Carbon Monoxide is a deadly gas that cannot be seen, smelt or tasted. It is responsible for the deaths of as many as 40 people each year and thousands more are treated in hospital for exposure. The conference will focus on research into the effects of CO, educating the public about the dangers and advances in technology that could improve people’s safety.
